SOUNDSET 2018

The annual one day hip-hop festival Soundset took over the Minnesota State Fairgrounds on Memorial Day weekend with some of the best acts and artist in hip-hop today, with hip-hop queen Kamaiyah kicked things off at the main stage.

Jaden Smith brought an iconic amount of energy to the main stage singing bangers off of his newest debut album SYRE. Not long after, Minneapolis local and Rhymesayers signee himself, Prof, took the stage for his first hometown performance since releasing his latest album, Pookie Baby. Prof brought an intense performance with no sign of slowing down like the true party animal he is.

Self acclaimed “DIY Pioneer”, Russ, seemed to think the everyone showed up solely to see him perform. With an already too big ego he asked the crowd not once, not twice, but three separate times “who came here just to see me?”. Maybe he was wondering that because a girl standing the front row was holding up a sign that said “I only came for Russ”. Toward the end of Russ’ set while he was still singing you could hear the crowd on the other side of the stage start to chant for Wu Tang, indicating they were here for The Wu Tang Clan and well over Russ’ performance. After some technical difficulties causing a bit of a delay the anticipation and expectations were high for the legendary Wu Tang Clan.

Unfortunately, Brockhampton ended up cancelling their entire tour which included their performance at Soundset, after announcing a statement the day before saying group member Ameer Vann was no longer a part of the group due to recent allegations and they needed some time to go home and regroup.

Some of the hottest rappers in the rap game today headlined Soundset 2018 including Tyler, the Creator with glittery vibes brought to us from his latest hit release album Flower Boy. Followed by Atlanta trap trio Migos, and soon after Logic to close out the festival.

SOUNDSET 2017

Memorial day weekend in Minnesota is not only a weekend of recognition, but a weekend of celebration of hip-hop music and the culture that surrounds it. Soundset is the biggest one-day hip-hop music festival in the world taking place at the Minnesota state fairgrounds annually with this year celebrating the 10th anniversary. The biggest year yet for the festival just breaking 35,000 guests. Soundset is known for hosting some of the biggest names in the hip-hop scene in the past, artists such as Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, Chance the Rapper, Machine Gun Kelly, A$ap Rocky, Future, Big Sean, Wiz Khalifa, and many more.

With Kevin Gates having to cancel due to an extended jail sentence and Mac Miller cancelling due to the Manchester incidents at Ariana Grande’s (Mac’s girlfriend) show earlier in the week the festival had to quickly pull some things together in order to fill the empty slots. Lil Uzi Vert ended up being a no show and Ty Dolla $ign’s flight had been delayed, causing the schedule to adjust leaving the festival goers confused and agitated. Uzi has yet to acknowledge the reason for his absence although he did send out a tweet implying he could be working hard on new music.

Because of the change of events everyone’s favorite Minnesota born hippy Mod Sun ended up being bumped up to the main stage. A “dream come true” he called it after telling the story how he has been kicked out of Soundset on three separate occasions for smoking weed. Meanwhile, over at the Fifth Element stage J. Plaza, D.R.A.M, Amine, Ty Dolla $ign, and more held it down. Between the Fifth Element stage and the two main stages there was a plethora of things to do such as ride the ferris wheel, eat fair food, check out the custom car show, or even the skate competition. With some slight delays Pusha T, Brother Ali, “President of the Bay Area” E-40, Gucci Mane, T.I, and more performed before main headliner Travis Scott made his debut.

A storm rolled in overhead right before Travis took the stage, downpouring during his grand entrance the thunder roared along with the thunder recordings going along with the set seeming as if it was part of the production. Scott’s new boo ultra-famous Kylie Jenner watched from side stage as the crowd thirty-thousand deep sang along to “Uber Everywhere” chanting “with them Kylie Jenner lips”. Soon after the rain stopped and the clouds broke to reveal a small rainbow bringing the festival to a seamless end.
